Why is Houdini difficult to learn?

It’s simply because it is so complicated. Because it so feature rich, because it is so good when it comes making edits, and complex sequences impossible in other studios, that you can probably build a full career around just Houdini.

However, because it is so feature rich, it is among the most difficult tasks you could possible ever attempt to complete. It is incredibly difficult, and rewarding, it is as hard to learn as it is valuable, and beneficial to your bottom line, dollar value as a worker.

It is one of the premier development suites in the industry, in use by Pixar, and the highest grade animation and development studios on the earth right now.

You can build a very good career with Houdini.

Houdini takes an unusual approach to 3D animation. Focusing on procedural techniques unseen in other animation suites. It is among the most beautifully resulting 3D Animation suites in terms of the end product, that one can find. Arguably the best, though you can fish around the others if you want ease of use, or beginner friendly.

If you want high level techniques like that, there’s nowhere else to go. You go with Houdini, you learn it, you learn it well, and you have a nice career.

Or you can try beginner friendly, it will take you a long way, maybe not quite to Pixar, but a long way. There is no harm in settling for something less powerful, less good, if it means you have ease of use.

But if you want to learn the best of the best, and you should want to learn the best of the best, you have few others, or no other choice, besides Houdini.

I would say it is a shame it is so difficult to learn, but since it’s power and ability are deeply intertwined with it’s feature rich nature and difficulty in learning and mastering, it is not really so unexpected that is not an easy thing to learn. It makes sense that it is. If it was easy to learn, it would be feature poor. Period.

Houdini is one of the best things in the world if you can master it. If not, that’s fine, you can learn something easier. That’s fine. But if you want the best of the best. There is basically nowhere else to go. It is Houdini or it is the highway. No middleground, no competitors, Houdini or nothing, if you want advanced procedural techniques of this nature.

Is it hard?

Yes of course it is. Why would something that important to learn, that complex and powerful, be easy to learn? I’m not exactly an animator, it is not my strength, however, I can recognize a winner when I see one. Houdini is the way to go, don’t bother with anything else. It’s pointless. Go with Houdini, learn it, and don’t waste your time on beginner friendly. You’re better off spending your time learning the best, than wasting it on something easy, feature poor, and pointless.
